Understanding Google's Algorithm

googles algorithm

Google's algorithm is complex and you need to understand it. We will discuss PageRank and Relevance signals as well as Page category and Linking root domains. These factors will determine your site's position in search results. Understanding how they work can help you optimize your site. However, it's not as easy as it sounds. You should understand what's behind each of these components before you implement them on your site.

PageRank

PageRank is an algorithm that ranks websites based on a random surfer model. A random surfer navigates between pages until he/she reaches his/her target website. After several clicks, the random surfer switches to another random site. The PageRank value shows how likely the surfer is to land on the page. PageRank is a Markov chain. The states represent pages and the transitions represent links between them. Sink pages refer to pages with no other links.

Relevance signals

To rank high in Google's search result pages, you will need to increase your website's relevance. Relevancy indicators are factors that Google uses in order to determine how relevant an object, or digital document, is to the search query. The relevance of a website depends on several factors, including how long it takes a visitor to read it and whether the site contains relevant content. Relevance signals include the number and relevance of any external links that your website has, as well as whether or not they are related to your site's content. If a site's content has many broken links, Google may penalize it, causing your page to rank poorly.

Category page

Google ranks pages by their category. A page about lawn decorations might fit in a flamingo/gnome category. However, the correlation score of flamingos pages isn't quite as high than a page about flamingos. This could be due to Google's past use of category matching, but the company has since switched over to other methods.

Linking root domains

Google uses thousands of factors to determine the linking root domains for websites in its search algorithm. They refer to the number and quality of links that point to your site from different sources. You can count each linking root domain as a link if you have more than one site linking to you. So, if two sites link to yours, they would each count as one linking root domain. In other words, the more linking root domains you have, the higher your site will rank in Google.

Speed update

This speed update may be confusing for you. While it will not affect all queries, some pages will be affected. The speed update is unlikely to have an impact on all websites. However, the change will only be applicable to pages with the highest load time. The intent of the search query still matters, and if a page is slow, it can still rank highly.

Penguin update

On April 24, 2013, Google launched the second Penguin update. While it affected only 0.3% of English language searches, it affected a higher percentage of Spanish queries. It also impacted languages that have more spam. This update is known as Penguin 2.1. The next generation of Penguin updates will be more aggressive and impact more languages. This update is designed to target websites with more spam links.
